[1 John 3:4]

Repentance means absolutely nothing
if you keep doing what you say you are sorry for.

"the people dwelling in darkness have seen a great light, and for those dwelling in the region and shadow of death, on them a light has dawned. From that time Jesus began to preach, saying,
'Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.'
"
-  Matthew 4:16-17

A brother gives this example: “Let’s say that you and I enter into a covenant (contract) agreement and you break the conditions of the covenant and in doing so you are required to pay a heavy price. But you are unable to pay the price. So I in my mercy I pay the price for you so that you can be allowed to come back in and renew the covenant with me and try to keep it once again so you can partake of the promises. Have I now extended mercy to you so you can now break the covenant at will, over and over again, with the mindset that it cannot be kept? Of course not…”

[ 1 John 3:4 | 1 John 5:3 ]

Hebrew Roots... believe true and genuine repentance means to stop to sinning (offending God), start hating sin, and developing a deep desire to please God by obedience to his commandments in the Bible. It is the violation of God's commandments that you are asking forgiveness for, that is the very definition of sin [1 John 5:3]. What you are returning or being restored to is a right relationship with God, a righteous life of obedience (opposite of sin) filled with blessings and not curses which leads to eternal life in God's Kingdom.

Matthew 19:16-17  “… one came and said unto Jesus, ‘Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life?’ And Jesus said unto him … ‘if you will enter into life, keep the commandments.’

Confession to God is required that, with all your heart, you are grieved and seeking forgiveness for having violated God's Laws and have a true desire to return to God's One Way [Psalms 32:5; 51:1-4].  Biblical repentance requires a genuine change of heart, attitude, and a change of direction and actions away from a life of sin (violating of God's Laws) towards a life of obedience.

Psalms 119:10-11 NKJV  "With my whole heart I have sought You; Oh, let me not wander from Your commandments!  Your word I have hidden in my heart, That I might not sin against You."

The Apostle Paul in Acts 20:21 stated that he preached "repentance toward God and faith in our Lord Jesus Christ."
Paul stated in 2 Corinthians 7:10: "For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret..."
In Acts 3:19, Peter stated: "Repent therefore, and turn back, that your sins may be blotted out..."
why? Verse 20: "that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord..."

Saving Faith IS Obedience to God's Laws

As James states: "Faith without works is dead." But not any works/actions is viewed by God as valid.  To prove one's faith to be true or alive can only be done by obedience to God's commands in his Word [James 2:14, 17, 22, 24].

James 2:18-20 NASB  "But someone may well say, 'You have faith and I have works; show me your faith without the works, and I will show you my faith by my works.' You believe that God is one. You do well; the demons also believe, and shudder.  But are you willing to recognize, you foolish fellow, that faith without works is useless?"

Romans 2:5 NASB  "But because of your stubbornness and unrepentant heart you are storing up wrath for yourself in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God, who WILL RENDER TO EACH PERSON ACCORDING TO HIS DEEDS"

Quoting Jesus (Y'shua) in Matthew 7:21-24

Continuing to live a life in violation of God’s Laws in the Old Testament will do more harm to break your relationship with God than anything else. Paul states that doing so makes you are “at war with God.” Because you have become rebellious against God in continuing to sin against him, he will, as a good and loving Father would do, attempt to bring you back to him by disciplining you, punishing you, and limiting your blessings. Your continued rebellion breaks away from being in fellowship and right relationship with God because you have turned your back on him and run away. [Isaiah 59:1-2] In the New Testament it is referred to as “Walking in the Flesh” or doing your own selfish will, not God’s. Paul states that to obey God’s Laws in the Old Testament can only be done as a result of God’s Holy Spirit residing in you – referred to as “Walking in the Spirit.” [Romans 8:5-8,12-14] The main sign that the Holy Spirit remains in you is that you continue to obey God’s Laws in the Old Testament - this proves that you truly do abide (live) in God and he abides (lives) in you.

True Repentance is first of the Heart, then proven by your actions.

Jesus (Y'shua) said in Matthew 23:25-28
"Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and the plate, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. You blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and the plate, that the outside also may be clean.
"Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within are full of dead people's bones and all uncleanness. So you also outwardly appear righteous to others, but within you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness."
